MONTHLY ADVICE / TIPS
November…We have a new offering for you this year. We at Howell Custom Interiors can help you with your holiday decorating. Some of you just don’t have time to do it all…very understandable with all the busy-ness of the season. Let us help you…we can do as much or as little as you need. We charge an hourly rate, and, if all you need is a consultation, the first 30 minutes is free! Now that Thanksgiving is past, most of us start thinking of Christmas and all the people who might be visiting our homes. It seems that every year, I notice the different ways that others decorate their homes, and hope that I can remember the details for the following year. I’m not willing to spend a lot of money on Christmas decorating, so here are some thrifty ideas that I have used: • Most of us have items in our Christmas boxes that we haven’t used in years. This year, take out all of those items, organize them by theme or color, then make a wreath. There are lots of inexpensive plain wreaths at the craft stores. I prefer to buy them at the Goodwill store and remove the old embellishments. Take some florist wire, and attach those unused ornaments, lights, and greenery to the wreath. Don’t skimp…the fuller, the better. Also, I’ve noticed that using items that are the same color or shades of the same color make a more dramatic statement. Temporarily take down a picture from the wall, and hang your new wreath! • Again…back to that pile of unused Christmas stuff. If you have a bunch of smallish ornaments…again in a single color group…put them all in a tall clear glass vase, then add a round of garland around the base. This makes a great table decoration. • Even if you don’t do a lot of outside decorating, make sure to at least decorate your front porch and door. My front door is all glass, so I don’t put a wreath on the door, but I plan to put garland and ornaments around the two light sconces beside the door. My wreath will be on the wall adjacent to the door, and it will have lights on it. Beside the door, I have a pedestal and pot that I did not put away at the end of the gardening season. I will add fresh greenery from my spruce trees, along with ornaments and a big bow. • I’ve gotten away from using the traditional red and green in my inside Christmas decorating because the colors in our home don’t go well with those colors. Instead, I have chosen deep red, silver, and gold for most of my inside decorating. I used to think that just because I had it, I had to use it. I’ve come to prefer a more harmonious look, and I’ve given myself permission to get rid of some of my old stuff. Until next time…peace, Jean Wilfong Howell SEPTEMBER 30, 2011 What a wild ride this economy and building business is! We are so grateful to continue to have business not only for our sake, but also for the sake of our sub-contractors. This year we have been fortunate to have completed... * a major room addition / 2nd floor above-garage bedroom suite and office in the Geist area * a new pole barn east of Greenfield; new siding and windows in Sugar Hills * 2 new porches in Noblesville and Elwood * 2 new bathrooms in New Palestine Almost finished is a new 2600 sf home in Cumberland. Here at home, we're now working on converting our barn into our garage. We'll have the nicest "barage" in the area! It will include a gardening shed, workshop, and workout room in addition to the 3 bays. We are grateful for upcoming opportunities to build two more houses beginning later this year. The only words of wisdom we have this time is to just stay open to the opportunities that present themselves. Surviving in this period is mostly about flexibility! Peace, Monte and Jean
